Guess what? My hooded cloak tutorial is the most viewed post on this site with 5000 views this month alone (in not-entirely-unrelated news, Happy Halloween!). Thanks, internet friends! Even Google has put me on the first page when you search for DIY hooded cloaks, so you know it’s legit. Don’t worry, I won’t let it go to my head.
Because there were questions in the comments, and we want to make sure we’ve been as thorough as possible with our explanations, Zach and I spent this weekend making a video tutorial showing every single tiny little step of the cutting and sewing process. I hope that– if you have been thinking about trying to sew your own hooded cloak, whether for yourself or your kids, for cosplay or LARP or anything else– you will go ahead and try this. EvenĀ If you have never sewn anything before, you can sew a lined, hooded cloak that you will be very, very proud of.
I would like to take a moment and mention that this video was made possible in part by (other) kids’ birthday parties, Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and copious amounts of chocolate. Also, the last two minutes are out-takes provided by my adorable one-and-a-half year old.
Here is the cloak I made, followed by a video.

Fabulous pattern & tutorial – I’m going out now to buy the fabric! Thanks so much.

what type of fabric is this? It looks so soft and beautiful

It is a flocked taffeta- a lightweight slightly silky fabric with velvety-textured accents. The lining is a brown satin. It made a lightweight cape that still had a little body.

How do I get the pattern for this cape

There is no pattern, unfortunately, but perhaps you can use the video tutorial to make your own. Best of luck!
